Hot Forging

Hot forging is the most used process for forging metal products when compared to cold and drop forging.

Hot forging is carried out at a temperature above the recrystallization temperature of the metal which makes the metal supple and ready to be formed into custom shapes. This form of intense temperature is required to avoid any strain hardening of the metal during formation process. The heated metal is then squeezed in a press, between a tool and a die surface.

There are several advantages to hot forging, these include:

  • Excellent shape manipulation due to high temperature process.
  • More flexible technique when compared with cold forging.
  • Outstanding surface quality allowing for polishing, coating, or painting finish.
  • Efficient process when working with heavy duty metals, such as steel.

There are a few disadvantages utilising hot forging, when compared to the alternative of cold forging. These include:

  • Cost, with temperatures required to be maintained at 1000° C and then returned to 500 ° C
  • In some cases, you achieve less precise dimensional tolerances.
  • There’s a risk of metal warping if not cooled correctly within the right environment.
