Cold Forging

Cold forging is a metal shaping manufacturing technique in which a metal bar is inserted and squeezed into a die to form a shape. This process is manufactured at a room temperature environment.

There are several advantages of cold forging, when compared to hot forging, these include:

  • Cold forging requires little to no finishing work.
  • There is a net material saving for material.
  • Reduced tooling cost (Dies within cold forging last longer)
  • Greater increase in metal yield and tensile strength.

There are a few disadvantages utilising cold forging, when compared to the alternative of hot forging. These include:

  • Limited number of metals can be processed.
  • Only basic and simple shapes can be formed, so not ideal for complex shapes.
