Metal Laser Cutting

Metal laser cutting is a very accurate and versatile method for cutting intricate metal shapes. The Laser cuts through the metal utilising a thermal separation process. Penetrating the metal through to the other side, following a path programmed via a CNC manufacturing process with uploaded CAD data.

Laser cutting technology has been utilised within manufacturing for over 50 years. However, it is only over the past 30 years that laser cutting technology has been utilised to cut metal, due to the power required to overcome the thermal conductivity of metals.

There are several advantages to metal laser cutting, these include:

  • High accuracy and precise cut.
  • No tooling required, low cost and lead-time.
  • Handle parts of almost every complexity.
  • High sheet utilisation, so less waste and maximisation of yield.
  • No damage or warping due to cutting method technique (Even with thinner metals).
  • Low power consumption when compared to pressed out machinery.

Below are the are main disadvantages of metal laser cutting:

  • Energy consumption can vary, it is not fixed, so it can be more expensive.
  • Manufacturing rate can vary depending on material or thickness.
  • Not every metal can be laser cut, such as copper and aluminium.
  • Incorrect machinery setup can result in material to burn.
