Metal Laser Cutting

Metal laser cutting is a very accurate and versatile method for cutting intricate metal shapes.

The Laser cuts through the metal utilising a thermal separation process. Penetrating the metal through to the other side, following a path programmed via a CNC manufacturing process with uploaded CAD data.

Manufacturers have utilised laser cutting technology for over 50 years. However, they have only used it to cut metal in the past 30 years, due to the power needed to overcome metals’ thermal conductivity.

Metal Laser Cutting - Barton International

Metal laser cutting offers distinct advantages in the UK, including high precision and accuracy for intricate and precise cuts without the need for tooling, which reduces costs and lead times. This method is effective for parts of varying complexity and maximises sheet utilisation, minimising waste. It causes minimal damage or warping, even with thinner metals, and consumes less power compared to traditional machinery.

However, metal laser cutting has drawbacks. Energy consumption can vary, leading to potentially higher operating costs. Production rates may fluctuate based on material type or thickness. Certain metals like copper and aluminium are not suitable for laser cutting due to their properties. Improper machinery setup can result in material burning, compromising cut quality and potentially damaging the material.
