Expendable mold casting is a process that utilises reusable molds, for low volume or single use production to produce metal components.
There are four main types of expandable mold casting techniques: gravity, slush, low-pressure, and vacuum.

The casting process involves pouring molten metal into a mould where it cools and solidifies. The operator then opens the mould, removes the casting, and reuses the mould for the next cycle. Typically, the mould consists of sand or plaster, materials chosen for their ability to withstand repeated heating and cooling, especially suited to low-volume production.
Expendable mould casting offers notable advantages for metal casting. It is a cost-effective process with relatively low tooling costs, making it ideal for small one-off production runs. This method supports the use of a wide variety of metals and allows for casting large parts efficiently.
However, there are some disadvantages to consider with expendable mold casting. It typically offers less accuracy compared to permanent mold castings, requiring larger tolerances. Additionally, the process often exceeds the calculated weight, which can impact material usage and production efficiency.
Despite these drawbacks, expendable mold casting remains a practical and accessible approach for casting various metal components, particularly in scenarios where cost efficiency and flexibility are key considerations.
